You Body Is Naturally Meant to Be Alkaline!

A huge component of the Healthy & Active Program is all about keeping your body’s pH in balance.  The term pH stands for the word “potent” and the H is the chemical symbol for hydrogen and how hydrogen behaves in your body is absolutely essential to hyour health.

Your Body is More Alkaline Than Acid

In order for the body to remain healthy and alive, your body keeps a delicate and precise balance of blood pH at 7.365, which is slightly alkaline. The body does whatever it has to in order to maintain this balance, including making us seriously ill in order to help us dispel the acid.

The problem is that most people have what can only be described as incredibly acid lifestyles. Acid is produced in your body whenever you have stress, upset emotions and when the food you eat is acid forming. The acid is only neutralized by alkaline substances.  The exces acid is stored in your fat cells and in order to try and control this your body will leach calcium, an alkaline substance,  from your bones in an attempt to stabilize your overall pH level..

The typical North American lifestyle diet is very acidic which puts a strain on all of your systems and organs and causes a lot of disease.

The Goldfish In Dirty Water Analogy

The author, Dr. Robert O. Young who wrote The pH Miracle: Balance Your Diet. Reclaim Your Health and who is at the forefront of research on the effects of the acid/alkaline balance in the human body, uses a “goldfish in the aquarium” anaology to describe how Imbalanced blood pH ruins our health.

“Pretend you had a goldfish in a bowl, and one day you saw the goldfish was beginning to look very unhealthy. You also notice that the water is a little dirty.

Chances are it's the water that's making the fish unhealthy, not the fish itself. When you change the water, the fish will get healthier. The fact that the goldfish is unhealthy is actually a symptom of the unhealthy environment. Not the problem. “[1]

Our bodies are more than seventy percent Water! And most of the time because of our diets, emotions and lifestyles, the "water" in our body is over-acidic, and to put it simply: toxic. Yet, even knowing this, modern day establishment medicine puts much more attention on fighting the symptoms, and not recognizing the root of the problem.

Acidity Is An Epidemic

It is a real challenge in these hectic times to keep our bodies in the proper pH balance and the result is that we often blow our metabolisms out so they do not function properly any more. This does not happen over night but rather, over a period of years.

Our bodies produce acid all of the time. During the digestion process (though to a lesser degree on an alkaline diet), respiration, normal metabolism, and cellular break-down.

Before you even account for what happens while you breathe, digestion and metabolism add enough acid to your body to significantly affect its pH, potentially decreasing it by as much as 2 points. That means that unless we help our bodies cope productively with these acid by-products, and/or if we overwhelm the body's ability to do so by piling on acidic food, drink, and behaviour, we are fated to be fat, sick and tired.

This is where a change in diet and lifestyle can be enormously helpful. It is possible to reverse your pH from acidic to alkaline. How Body Building Boosts Metabolism

Although aerobic exercise like walking, jogging and swimming is helpful to the metabolism, the best way to boost it is through body building.  The weight lifting exercises that are part of body building trigger your body to keep burning fat long after you have stopped exercising. This means that even as you are sitting, reading or napping your body’s muscles will continue to burn calories and help speed up your overall weight loss.

Body Building Is Not Just For Men

Traditionally the realm of body building was thought to belong to men who want to bulk up and appear manly. This is s stereotype that no longer applies as women also discover the fat burning benefits of anaerobic exercise programs such as weight lifting and Pilates. Pilates which uses a system of counterbalances and pulleys to streamline the body is particularly useful for women.

Today’s weight lifting equipment is also now designed for both sexes to use and most gyms have full circuit training available, including weight lifting machines and the pulleys and boards that are part of Pilates.

The Benefits of Body Building

Aside from building muscular strength body building also creates stamina and increases endurance. This enables you to exercise more often and for a longer time which in turn also helps you increase your metabolism’s ability to burn fat .

It can also help your body metabolize fats, eliminate fibroids and dead tissue, increase circulation and help with motor control and balance. Body building should also be considered to be an important part of any anti-aging regime because it also prevents muscle wasting.

Bodybuilding also has psychological benefits. Those who have more muscle tend to be more confident and have higher self-esteem. They accomplish more because they look and the feel better.

Bodybuilding also keeps you young because it helps you build stronger bones and prevent bone thinning diseases like osteoporosis. You will feel strong and fit because you have become more active and mobile. Many older muscle builders find their lower back pain also disappears as they build core strength.and their abdominal muscles are able to help the spine support their weight.

Body Building is More Than Just a Hobby

For years body building has an image of being almost a fetish rather than a real health return, guaranteed to build you up so that you can get even with that bully kicking sand on the beach.  Nowadays body building is seen more of a way of helping you live longer and optimize your health.  The activity is so much more than bout modeling shiny hard muscles with popped out veins.

The bottom line is that the more body  building that you do, the more energy you will have and the more efficiently your metabolism will work.  Body building also helps you shed excess fat so that there is a lot less of you to carry around, which means that you become a lean, mean and efficient human being with lots of strength and more resistance against disease.

If you practice bodybuilding you are also no longer exhausted by daily tasks like climbing stairs, shoveling snow or carrying groceries. Everything becomes so much easier.

Body building is also recommended as part of a Healthy and Active Lifestyle maintenance or weight loss program because when you lose this weight this way, you do not lose muscle and bone.  When you diet there is always the risk that you will burn tissue and bone rather than your stubborn reserves of fat.

Ideally you should mix up a program of aerobic exercise with anaerobic exercise to optimize your health as part of a Healthy and Active Lifestyle choice.

7 Common Mistakes That Joggers and Runners Make

Once you have been on the Health and Active Lifestyle program a while you might find yourself taking up running or jogging as a way of keeping your body in fantastic working order.  However as good as you feel about your newfound energy it is easy to overdo it.

Here is a look at the common mistakes that runners and joggers make before they go for a run.

1. Overhydrating the Body

Although it is important to stay hydrated when you are on the Healthy and Active Program and particularly if you are on a detox diet or weight loss diet, there is such a thing as overhydrating. If you drink too much water just before a jog or run you will feel physically uncomfortable and risk impaired performance. There is a condition called Hyponatremia that results from drinking too much water that can induce nausea, headache, cramps and vomiting.

2. Ignoring Heat and Humidity

The ideal temperature for jogging or running is about five degrees Celsius and dryer, cooler weather is preferred.  Higher temperatures and humidity only slow a jogger or runner down. If it is really hot be sure to hydrate yourself slowly throughout the hours in advance of the race.  Wear thinner, lighter colour clothing and avoid wearing navy blue or black.  If it is really hot, shed as much clothing as possible before you go for a run or jog.

3. Not Breaking In New Shoes

It is a mistake to go running in a brand new pair of shoes that have not been broken in. Although some shoes do not need much breaking in at all, it is better to be on the safe side and make sure the shoes are comfortable before you wear them out on a long jaunt.

4. Being Unrealistic About Your Goals

Many people believe they can run a lot further than they actually can. If you are planning a course for a jog or a run that is long distance, make sure that you have a transit plan for return if you are not 100% certain that you can make your goal.

5. Failing to Slow Down When Going Up Hills

If you approach a hill it is okay to slow down if you find yourself gasping for breath. If you push too hard going up the hill you could use up all of your available glycogen and hit the kind of physical wall that could have you too exhausted to run your full jogging or running course.

6. Running With An Injury or Inflammation

If you have inflammation or an injury it is not a good idea to embark on a long exhausting jog or run.  This is especially true if the injury is in the spine, neck, legs or limbs.  Running when you are not healthy can cause permanent damage to your body.

7. Not Being In The Mood to Run

If you are not in the mood to run, then don’t force yourself. You must feel enthusiastic about it or you will probably not perform at your best. Music and running with a buddy or dog can help provide you with the inspiration you need to get some exercise.

Dragon Fruit – The Fierce Free Radical Fighter and Metabolic Bargain Food

Dragon fruit is the fruit of a Cactus that is grown in in Southeast Asia, Mexico, Central and South America, and Israel. It is also known as the Pitaya or Pitahaya, Dragon Pearl Fruit, Fire Dragon Fruit, Green Dragon, Dragon Fruit and Strawberry Pear.  It is packed with vitamins, minerals and even the healthy omega acids, which makes this food a metabolic bargain with a high payoff of nutrition for your body.

The best place to find Dragon Fruit is in Asian and Far Eastern markets although some high-end supermarkets are starting to offer it.

One of the Prettiest Superfruits

Dragon Fruit is large, round and rose hip shaped with pink, greensand yellow tendrils on its side.  The interior flesh is studded with hundreds of tiny seeds that make it look like a polka-dot fruit.  Most weigh in between three and four pounds.

This fruit is available in three colors. Two varieties have pink skin but one with white and the other with red skin. The third type is yellow with white flesh. The type most commonly found in Canadian markets usually has pink skin.

Dragon Fruit
Dragon fruit also has a lovely fresh taste. It is sweet and crunchy with taste that is like a cross between a pear and a kiwi.  The ripe fruit should have a bit of give when you press it with your finger, but not be too mushy.

A Nutritional Powerhouse

Dragon fruit is packed with nutrition. One fruit is only 60 calories with 8 percent of the calories coming from protein. It contains Vitamin C and is a vegan source of many minerals including phosphorus, calcium, iron and antioxidants.  The pretty fruit is also an excellent source of fibre, which is helpful for the digestive tract.

As the fruit has a texture similar to watermelon, it is an excellent source of water.  It is a superb diet food as it contains 15 grams of protein and 1 gram of fat. This makes it a sustainable choice for people following low calorie diets. It also has traces of Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Riboflavin and Niacin.  It is also one of the few fruits that is high in polyunsaturated Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids.

This fruit is also super high in cancer, anti-inflammatory and disease fighting properties called phytoalbumins. These agents help your body excrete heavy metal toxins. Furthermore it is a highly alkaline fruit, which makes it a very suitable choice for most people adhering to the Healthy and Active Diet program.

The Health Benefits of Dragon Fruit

Aside from being a known weight loss aid because it is low in calories and high in fibre and protein, this exotic fruit can also help lower blood sugar, manage cholesterol and control your blood pressure. Special nutritional constituents in the seeds help improve the way you metabolize carbohydrates.  The flesh of the fruit itself is very easy to digest because it is a simple carbohydrate. It is an ideal food for individuals in convalescence to eat.

How to Eat Dragon Fruit

Wash the Dragon Fruit and then cut it in half. You should be able to slide a spoon or knife around the edge of the flesh and simply unearth it from the shell.  The fruit can then be easily sliced into cubes.  The white flesh of the Dragon Fruit is quite attractive cut up in cubes because it almost looks like dice.  The red variety is very exotic looking and looks almost like a raspberry crossed with a watermelon.
